Spot bitcoin ETFs are approved in the US
On 10 January 2024 the US Securities and Exchange Commission allowed listed products that hold bitcoin itself to trade, and they began trading the next day. Inflows into the largest funds were rapid.
The approval made bitcoin accessible through ordinary brokerage accounts and helped push its price to new highs later in the year. It did not change the asset's volatility or its unproven role in a diversified portfolio.
The takeaway
Wider access lowers friction; it does not lower risk.
