The fastest bear market in history
From its record on 19 February 2020 to the low on 23 March, the S&P 500 fell by about a third, entering a bear market faster than at any time before. Days such as 12 and 16 March, when US stocks fell nearly 10% and 12%, were among the worst since 1987.
Then the recovery was just as extraordinary: aggressive central-bank and government support helped stocks regain their previous highs by August.
The takeaway
Bear markets can be brief; the investors hurt most were those forced to sell at the bottom.
