Evergrande and China's property reckoning
In September 2021 China Evergrande Group, with liabilities of more than $300 billion, began missing payments to lenders and bondholders. Beijing's "three red lines" rules on developer leverage had cut off its access to finance.
Evergrande's troubles spread through the property sector, which accounts for a large share of Chinese economic activity, and weighed on Chinese high-yield bonds and household confidence for years.
