New York Community Bancorp falls 37% on property losses

On 31 January 2024 New York Community Bancorp, the parent of Flagstar Bank, reported a fourth-quarter net loss of $260 million. About $185 million of loans were written off in the quarter, mostly two large real estate loans, and the quarterly dividend was cut from 17 cents to 5 cents a share. The shares closed down 37% at $6.47, American Banker reported.

The bank pointed to weakness in the office sector and to possible pressure on its multifamily loans from higher interest rates, and said the dividend cut would help it build capital as it moved above $100 billion in assets and into a stricter regulatory category.

The fall revived memories of the regional-bank stress of March 2023 and focused attention on how much commercial property debt sits on banks' balance sheets.

The takeaway

Property values and bank balance sheets are linked through loans. Stress in one can show up in the other.
