Event risk: what a market-history archive can and cannot teach
Few of the events in this archive were forecast, and none will repeat in the same form. What repeats is the mechanism: leverage that forces selling, a promise of access that the assets cannot support, a concentration in one borrower or one sector, a policy change with little notice, a price that has come to depend on expectations.
Reading the archive by asset class, rather than by date, shows which mechanisms matter most for each. Property funds meet liquidity limits, private credit meets documentation and withdrawal limits, commodities meet supply shocks, listings meet pricing and lock-ups, and bonds meet rates and defaults.
These pieces are retrospectives, written with hindsight. They are not predictions and they are not advice.
